             An Inspiration | A Reflection  | A Perspective

The legacy of the late Master Sculptor C. Dakshinamoorthy lives on in the works and mind of his prodigy K. Velmurugan. Deeply indebted to his mentor who initiated him in the art of stone sculpture, Velmurugan has been creating works since 2005. His inspiration embraces nature, the human, the flora and the fauna. It is an honest expression that evokes everything, from grief to pain to humour and hope.

Velmurugan's sculptures are profound reflections of his life’s journey, and appear autobiographical in their disposition mirroring the artist’s current disposition, the highs and lows of Samsara that rocks the boat of life.

The sculptor’s understanding of the medium is clear and he shapes by the controlled removal of stone his form which emerges from the material. Rooted in Indianness, the frontal portraits of earthy women often the subject matter of his mentor, is seen in his forum in a perspective influenced by his beliefs and experiences — everything he is going through, everything he is taught, and everything he observes……

Like a chain that is linked together as a team, so too every work he creates leads him to the next and connects his past and present. A chain reaction. Be it a bouquet of flowers, a woman, a woman wearing a bouquet of flowers as her headdress we see a pattern which is connected by a notion that is common in all - his personal perspective and his inspiration both which are reflections of his choices.
