Artists all over the world paint the rain with such vibrancy and its beautiful reflective quality. From the murky reflections in stagnant waters to the blurry reflections of light on elegant glass windows, the artists try to bring out the formless yet transforming qualities of the monsoon.

Chennai has a unique paradoxical relationship with rain; a mixture of love and hate and yet its beauty remains undiminished. The Chennai heat that reign’s throughout the year is completely swallowed when the monsoon arrives. With it the rains bring the earthy smell, the refreshing winds and the unusual chillness that relaxes both body and mind. Along with it also comes the bad roads, a gloomy sky and the constant wetness which makes Chennaiites furrow their brows. However the monsoons distract them from the heat and the everyday monotony. It also makes them very happy inside because this also means availability of more water.

The monsoons are always a cleansing and refreshing time. The grey’s bringing a neutral not just to the sky but to the greys in our minds as well filling it with the need for colour and magic. This change in the air is what the artist has portrayed in his paintings. One can almost smell and feel the rain in these cityscapes that reflect the varied moods of the city in its favorite monsoon season.
